FAQs

What does Rolfing feel like?

I use my hands, forearms, elbows, and sometimes knees and feet to make contact. I sometimes cue your breath and movement to evoke awareness and help create a shift.

Does it hurt?

Nowadays Rolfers are trained to work with the client and their nervous system, not against it. The contact may be light and gentle, sometimes deep, sometimes intense, but never too much for you to breathe through. You should always feel safe.

How is it different from massage?

Rolfing is a therapeutic process aimed at co-creating lasting, profound change in how you experience your body and its movements in your daily life. Rolfers are interested in balancing the body n relationship to gravity; Releasing restrictions that inhibit free movement; Coordinating body, mind and breath for strength, grace, enjoyment and efficiency. This work often affects not only the physical structure, but also physiological functioning, emotions, thought patterns and relational behaviors.

How is it different from chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a widely varied field. The high-velocity spinal adjustments that many associates with chiropractic, are absent from Rolfing. Rolfing deals with the connective tissues surrounding bones, organizing them so that the bones and joints can adjust into a new, more aligned placement. Rolfing also has an endpoint (Ten Series, with optional tune-ups afterward as desired) whereas many chiropractic patients keep returning for continuous care.

Will Rolfing help me with my (back, neck, knees, running, yoga, etc.?)

Rolfing is a therapeutic process; As a result, effects are not guaranteed. That said, I work closely with my clients to monitor their goals and carefully craft a treatment plan with those in mind. A central Rolfing principle is that a balanced body is self-organizing and that given the proper input, imbalances, excessive tension, and chronic/recurring pain tend to drastically reduce or even disappear for good.

Do the effects last?

The effects of the Ten Series and of Post-Ten work are cumulative and evolving. It is not uncommon for people to continue to integrate changes for months or even years after their series. In my perspective, lasting change, or the ability to bounce back when the body tips toward imbalance, requires clients to have or develop self-awareness and self-efficacy. Fortunately, Rolfing helps clients to develop or strengthen these skills.

How can I get started (I've never been Rolfed before)?

The Ten Series is recommended for one who has never been Rolfed. To get started you can try one session without obligation to continue. If you have questions before booking, please feel free to contact me.

How can I get started (I've already been through the Ten Series)?

You have options! You might repeat the series, or come in for tune-ups, or do a targeted series of 3-5 sessions. We’ll discuss the best course of action based on your goals and previous experience.

When are you available?

Wed-Sat, 10:30am-7pm. For real-time availability, please go to the booking page.

Can you travel to me?

I may be able to travel to you for sessions. You will need to have a massage table for Rolfing, or a Thai Mat or equivalent for Thai Bodywork. I charge my hourly rate for travel time to/from my Greenpoint office. Please contact me if you are interested in discussing the possibility of having in-home sessions.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please give as much notice as possible if you need to cancel/change your appointment so I can offer the spot to someone on my waitlist. I ask for a minimum of 48 hours notice, and charge the full session fee for cancellations/changes made less than 24 hours in advance. I will always respect your time and kindly ask that you do the same for me.

COVID-19 Safety

I am fully vaccinated and follow up-to-date CDC guidelines. As of this writing on 9/19/22 I currently have a “masks optional” policy.

Hygiene

Please practice good hygiene for your sessions. Shower before and wear clean clothing. Avoid wearing lotion as it is a detriment to accessing deeper myofascial layers.

Intoxication & Medication

Please note that there is a strict no intoxication policy, including marijuana and alcohol. There may be an exception for medical prescriptions, but please inquire first. There are certain medications which are contraindicated for Rolfing, such as painkillers and muscle relaxants. If you are on a prescription for these, please inquire before booking as to whether it's safe to receive Rolfing. If you arrive at your session under the influence, or if your ability to receive Rolfing is impaired, I reserve the right to cancel/discontinue the session and you will be responsible for its full cost.
